A Journey of Service: Aisha Miran on Leadership and Creating Impact

A Journey of Service: Aisha Miran on Leadership and Creating Impact

Despite a career defined by significant milestones, Her Excellency Aisha Miran rarely frames her journey around personal achievements. Instead, she speaks of responsibility—the responsibility to serve, to keep learning and to create opportunities for others.

She has never viewed each chapter of her career as simply a position to attain but as an opportunity to contribute and make a lasting difference.

Long before becoming Director General of Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Aisha was an AUS student beginning a journey of her own.

As a member of the university’s inaugural cohort, she arrived at an institution that was still building its own foundations. “We grew alongside the university,” she recalled. “I even remember how challenging the entrance exam was. It was clear from day one that AUS held itself and its students to a very high standard.”

While her cohort was relatively small, it offered an experience shaped by diversity and exchange.

“Learning in such a diverse environment alongside world-class faculty broadened my perspective and taught me the value of diverse viewpoints,” she said. “The academic rigour also pushed us beyond technical knowledge, developing critical thinking, communication, teamwork and resilience.”

A decade after graduating, Aisha returned to AUS to complete her Executive MBA, deepening her connection with the institution that had shaped her early years.

“I’m very proud to call myself an AUS graduate. The university gave me a strong academic foundation, but just as importantly, it instilled high standards, confidence and a mindset of continuous growth,” she reflected.

While AUS helped shape her outlook, the desire to make a difference had been with her long before she stepped on campus.

From an early age, Aisha knew she wanted her career to make a meaningful impact. She was drawn to advocacy and public service, even considering studying law because of her desire to change people’s lives for the better. Her path eventually took her in a different direction, but the purpose remained unchanged.

“Early on in my career, I had the opportunity to work at the centre of government across a wide range of sectors. That gave me a broad perspective, but I found myself drawn to education because of its impact on people’s lives. So, while I can’t say my path into educational leadership was intentionally planned, my passion for public service was,” she explained.

At every stage in her career, Aisha has returned to one central question: "How can this make a meaningful difference to people’s lives?"

“Whether it’s education, governance or policy, the goal is always to create opportunities, strengthen communities and contribute to the long-term success of the UAE,” she said.

Aisha sees education as “one of the most powerful ways to create opportunity, build future generations and shape the future of a nation.”

She noted: “It’s one of those sectors where the work you do today can have an impact for decades to come. You can see this work’s impact in different ways. Sometimes it’s immediate and sometimes you’re laying foundations that might not produce results for years. Either way, you’re helping shape the future, one learner at a time.”

Having reached one of the highest levels of leadership, Aisha’s advice begins with a simple principle: “Stay curious!”

“No matter how much experience you gain, there’s always something new to learn and the best leaders never stop learning,” she explained.

She also believes that some of the most important lessons emerge from difficult moments.

“Challenges are often our greatest teachers. Success is important and should absolutely be celebrated, but setbacks are where we build resilience, adaptability and perspective. Every difficult experience leaves you with something valuable if you’re willing to learn from it,” she said.

Over time, these experiences have shaped Aisha’s understanding of leadership as a collective effort, built on trust and the strength of the people around her.

“One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that you don’t have to face challenges alone,” Aisha said. “Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about listening, asking the right questions and bringing together people with different expertise to solve problems collectively.”

When Aisha reflects on her journey from an AUS student to Director General, she sees it as a story of continuous learning. “I think every experience—both professional and personal—has shaped the person I am today. I’ve been incredibly fortunate and blessed to work on meaningful initiatives, learn from exceptional mentors and colleagues and grow through both successes and challenges,” she said.

She also says that she would not change the experiences that brought her to where she is today. “Every step, even the difficult ones, taught me something valuable,” she added.

This influenced her advice to current AUS students who aspire to contribute to public service, education or nation-building. “Stay curious, work with purpose and never underestimate the impact you can have, regardless of your role or where you are in your career. Meaningful change doesn’t always come from big titles. It comes from showing up every day with integrity, commitment and a genuine desire to serve others,” she said.

Her final message to students is also a reminder of the responsibility that comes with being part of the AUS community.

“Be proud to be an AUS graduate,” she said. “The university has earned a reputation for excellence and with that comes both an opportunity and a responsibility to uphold those values wherever your career takes you.”
